Often when your home needs a repair, the signs are obvious and visible. Peeling paint, dripping faucets, and sheetrock cracks can all be clearly seen and heard. That’s probably why many homeowners deal with these problems immediately, but leave insulation problems for years and years without addressing them.
Roof insulation is hidden. It’s tucked away in the attic, a place most people never venture. You can’t see it, and let’s face it, there are probably more glamorous improvements you might prefer to make.
However, if you don’t deal with your roof insulation you’re going to waste a lot of money, and your home won’t be nearly as comfortable as it could be. In fact, during the height of summer you could be downright miserable, simply because you’re forcing your home to work a lot harder to provide cool air. And, of course, your energy bills go up.

We’ve already mentioned this one. You shouldn’t have to blast your AC during the summer just to avoid sweating buckets…and of course if you do blast your AC you’re going to end up paying for the privilege of doing so.
- You feel strange drafts.
A drafty home is an under-insulated home. You should never feel air from outside your house coming inside your house unless you’ve got a window open.
- You experience dramatic changes in temperature when you travel from room to room.
For the most part, the temperature in each of your rooms should be more or less consistent throughout the home, unless you’re running an old-style window AC unit. Central air and heat systems were designed specifically to keep the air at roughly the same temperature. If you suddenly get a lot hotter in your living room, for example, then your living room’s insulation isn’t doing its job.
- Your walls are noticeably warm.
If you put your hand on a wall during the summer and feel that it’s warm to the touch, you’ve got a problem. That’s outdoor heat seeping inside, and it’s a real problem.
